SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 3

Ross, Helmick, Yoder and Tomblin, Mr. President)
Requesting the division of highways to rename the New River
bridge on I-64 the "Mary Draper Ingles Bridge" with
appropriate signs being placed on both ends of the bridge.
Whereas, It is appropriate to honor this early pioneer by
naming the bridge after this noble woman who, in her flight from
Ohio to Draper Meadows, Virginia, would have passed under where
the bridge is now located; and
Whereas, Her capture and subsequent escape from the Shawnee
Indians was a heroic act that changed history; and
Whereas, There have been several books and stories about her
pioneer life on the New River, including the best seller, Follow
the River; therefore, be it
Resolved By the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the division of highways is hereby requested to name
the New River bridge on I-64 the "Mary Draper Ingles Bridge" with
appropriate signs being placed on both ends of the bridge; and,
be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the
commissioner of the division of highways and to the Summers
county historical society.
